Dr. Scott J. Turner Launches Campaign To Educate Public On Plastic Surgery Effects

Specialist recognizes need for informing patients on what to expect following surgery.

Sydney, NSW, Australia – April 10, 2014 /MarketersMedia/ —

Recent reports indicate Australia has seen a 30 percent surge in the number of people undergoing cosmetic procedures. While wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers make up a large portion of this market, appearance enhancing surgeries continue to gain popularity. Though critics are becoming progressively less concerned with the safety of such procedures due to industry advances, new worries have recently come to light.

Numerous people dive into plastic surgery without considering the immediate results; furthermore, many cosmetic surgeons seem to drop the ball when it comes to fully educating their patients on this aspect of their procedures. When the outcome of these surgeries falls short of patients’ expectations, the effects can be devastating. With this in mind, Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Scott J. Turner (http://surgeon.drturner.com.au/) has launched a campaign to educate potential patients on some of the lesser mentioned details of cosmetic procedures.

Dr. Turner affirmed, “So many patients go into these surgeries expecting immediate perfection. Often, they are initially met with utter disappointment. Any type of surgery, whether an eyelid lift or a life saving procedure, is followed by some degree of recovery time. There will be some side effects at first. Though they certainly fade, if a patient comes out of surgery unprepared for them, they can be quite a shock. My goal is to make sure this doesn’t happen to my patients.”

Face lifts are among the most common invasive procedures. Dr. Turner noted patients come out of surgery with drain tubes and heavy bandaging in place. Once the bandages are taken off, an elastic support must be worn. Swelling, bruising and stitches will remain visible. After approximately one week, the stitches are removed; in the week following, swelling will diminish. Full effects will not be fully evident for several months after the surgery.

Those undergoing breast augmentation can expect sutures to remain in place for a time. Some degree of bruising and swelling is common, and a compression garment must be worn to provide the support necessary to maintain positioning of the implants. It takes time for the implants to settle and for swelling to dissipate before natural looking results emerge.

Dr. Turner concluded, “It is important to emphasize the roles qualification and experience play in the outcome of cosmetic procedures. Any physician with a basic medical degree is allowed to practice in the cosmetic field; however, ensuring a surgeon is fully qualified to perform plastic surgery is vital to reducing the number of negative side effects. True plastic surgeons must hold specialized training and certifications. Anyone wishing to learn more can visit http://surgeon.drturner.com.au/about-us/ to set up a consultation.”

Dr. Turner’s training includes a BSc in Anatomy and Pharmacology from the University of NSW and an MBBS with Honors and a Masters of Surgery in Plastic Surgery from the University of Sydney. He was a recipient of the John Brookes Moore scholarship for surgery, and after 8 more years of dedicated training among the major teaching hospitals in Sydney, he was awarded his FRACS(Plas), meaning he is specifically trained and qualified to bear the title Specialist Plastic Surgeon.
