Recording studio for musicians opens up in Monroe

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – A non-profit organization, has opened up in downtown which has local musicians excited and spending a lot of time making music. It's called Tipitina's and it was founded in New Orleans. Nolan Crane spoke with local artists who say this addition to Monroe is changing their lives.

When it comes to making music Jimmie Bryant can do it all.

"I am a classically trained violist and violinist. I've been playing for about 22 years," said Bryant.

He has put down the string instruments and picked up the sticks, mastering the drums.

"About ten years ago I decided I wanted to break away from the classical realm and start to play rock and roll as it were," said Bryant.

He formed a band and thanks to Tipitina's expanding from New Orleans to Monroe with this new building his band can follow their dreams and produce a demo-reel. It cost $10 ten a month and Tipitina's even provides the instruments.

"A lot of times musicians don't have money so they can't afford a laptop of their own. Myself being one of those people," said Mitch Laing.

It doesn't matter if you like Rock and Roll, R and B or rap. All of the artist cutting their tracks have the same goal.

"I want to be able to make a living and support myself doing the only thing I've ever loved doing," said Laing.

The music scene might be competitive but inside these doors Terrance Nelson says everyone is looking out for each other.

"It's not dog eat dog, everyone is here for everybody, there isn't anybody better than anybody. Everyone is just here doing their thing, it's all love," said Nelson.

If you have music in your mind and soul like Jimmie Bryant he recommends you become a member of Tipitina's.

Tipitina's is located at 502 North 2nd Street in Monroe. The building is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.
