Ouachita We Care

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - We have an update to a story we first brought you last week on the grassroots efforts of homeowners in Monroe to form Ouachita We Care. Since that report more people have signed the pledge to keep their homes and neighborhoods cleaned-up. As Nolan Crane reports government leaders are now getting involved.

One of the main reasons homeowners near Selman Drive started Ouachita We Care is because of the amount of trash that's in the streets and in front of their homes. They say bus stops like this is one of the big problems because there are no trash cans nearby and there are a lot of people up and down the road.

"People get on the bus, they can't carry their trash and they throw their trash down before they get on the bus. This way it gives them a place to put their trash and help us keep a clean community there," said Glenn Heckard.

During their monthly community meeting city leaders showed up to talk about other ways to keep these streets and ditches clean.

"We are going to walk and knock doors. We're going to local businesses and ask them to pledge and do some things that we feel like will make a difference. We're going to put up cameras, we're going to check people," said Pat Moore.

The people in today's meeting hope their spirit of a clean and safe community will spread, instead of this trash. They know their goals are bigger than themselves.

"We need more people to step up to the plate and become interested in moving forward with the community," said Glenn Heckard.

Government leaders all across Ouachita Parish say they are happy to see homeowners take pride in their neighborhood. They hope Ouachita We Care continues to grow as more homeowners sign the pledge.

If you live in Ouachita Parish and notice people throwing trash in the roads the Ouachita Parish Police Jury wants your help. They are asking everyone to take a photo and send a text to 318-366-0795.
