Drainage concerns highlight Monroe council meeting

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Monroe City Council easily passed its 2014-15 operating budget, but drainage concerns took most of the focus during the meeting.

Record rains over the weekend caused flooding throughout the city. City officials said flooding is usually caused by clogged ditches.

Some of that debris damaged the Rochelle Pump Station after being sucked into the pipes. The council voted Tuesday night on emergency repairs that will cost up to $40,000.

The council passed the budget on a 4-0 vote.

The council and Mayor Jamie Mayo reached a compromise last month where the council would pass Mayo's $58.9 million budget as-is if he would commit $400,000 to council projects.
