Union Parish to elect new sheriff

FARMERVILLE, La. (KNOE 8News) - In Union Parish, for the first time in 24 years, voters will elect anew sheriff.

Some of you may remember,former Sheriff Bob Buckley lost his battle with cancer in September. And DeputyDusty Gates stepped in to fill his shoes, but that could all change when thepolls close.

Supporters took to thestreets of union parish. They were reminding people to vote and urging them tosupport their candidate.

Bettye Slocum is votingfor Dusty Gates. She said she has known Gates for more than 20 years and shebelieves he has done a good job as interim sheriff.

"Dusty has a visionto bring about the community together. He is working hard with the elderly, withall types in the community, putting neighborhood watches in place. He has adrug enforcement team working hard for the parish," Slocum.

Sarah Canales and herhusband went to the polls together to vote for Matt Jones. Canales said Jones'many years as a Louisiana State Trooper make him qualified to serve as sheriff.She also knows Jones personally. He is her neighbor.

"He would crack downon the drugs here in Union Parish. I think he would be a fair and honest man,"Canales said.

Over at Wal-Mart,candidate Richie Dunn is doing some last minute campaigning. Dunn said he hasreceived a lot of support, but has turned down volunteers and money.

'We just feel that self-fundedcandidates are the better way to go. We don't owe any special favors in return,"Dunn said.

No matter how the numbersfall, Union parish will have a newly elected sheriff for the first time in 24years.
