Businesses evicted to make way for mystery store

Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Several businesses on Cypress Street are being told to pack up and move somewhere else. It's to make room for a new construction and it's anyone's guess as to what that may be.

"This area does need a facelift, it's run down," says Joe Ware about the Traveler's Rest Square, "I think it would be good for the community."

Such a positive outlook on new business coming to town, especially since Ware is one of the many business owners being evicted.

In mid-March, businesses were given until April 30th to move out of the shopping center across from Boley Elementary.

Ware says it didn't quite come as a surprise, "When they started doing foundation checks out in the parking lot, that's when we knew something was about to happen."

Manager of the center, Lori Ware, says demolishing the current buildings could start as early as May 1st, but the big question on everyone's mind:  What will replace the shopping center?

"We have asked the owners," says Joe Ware, "They have told us several times that they are under a confidentiality notice."

Tight-lipped management and city officials haven't stopped the rumor mill.

"All I know is that it's rumored to be Walmart," says Ware. More specifically, the word on social media and around town is that a Walmart Neighborhood Market may be built.

Management of the shopping center says it's believed that the mystery company is also looking to build in Monroe. Mayor Jamie Mayo reportedly said a national grocery store may be coming to north and south Monroe.

A source in city hall says neither of the locations have been secured.

In West Monroe, no permits to demolish or rebuild have been filed.

"It could be Walmart, it could be Costco, it could be Kroger," says Rob Wheat with Game Mechanix.

Wheat is having to pack up his store, but he says that any new business, would be great for the area.

"It think it was built in the 50s, so the shopping center has been here for a while. It's been patched several times, but it needs a facelift," says Wheat.

So the mystery remains for now. As more information is released about the West Monroe or possible Monroe stores, we will bring you the latest.
