Keeping Ouachita Parish clean and safe

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - When it comes to safety and cleanliness homeowners in one Ouachita parish community are taking matters into their own hands. Our Nolan Crane spoke with members of the Ouachita We Care Organization to find out why their message is spreading.

When you travel down Selman Drive in Monroe it's what you don't see that might standout thanks to homeowners like Glenn Heckard. In January he started the community organization Ouachita We Care.

"We're hoping that every resident that lives in Ouachita Parish will take the time to kind of cleanup around their area," said Glenn Heckard.

More than 30 homeowners have read the pledge, placed signs in their yards and spent hours making sure ditches like these remain litter free.

"Mostly it's coming from the traffic that's coming through, you know people want to dump their food that they've eaten or bottles they've drinking out of," said Tamberla Reitzell.

Although these homeowners don't make the mess they say it's important to clean it up.

"Half of the time it's in your yard or it's in your area. You should want to step out and you know pick up your trash you know or see something across the way go out and just keep the area nice and neat," said Reitzell.

"I like to see our neighborhood be a clean neighborhood because when there's a lot of junk around, it brings the value of the property down," said Nelvin Rainwater.

There is more to this organization than just keeping their homes and yards clean and organized. Spending time like they are doing today getting to know each other Glenn Heckard says will help reduce crime since there is a greater sense of community among neighbors.

There are informational meetings about Ouachita We Care the second Wednesday of every month at the Clarion Inn located off of Highway 165-South. For more information you can call Glenn at (318) 654-4089
