Southside Elementary in Morehouse Parish fights against possible closure

Posted: Updated:

BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Southside Elementary administrators, teachers, and parents are all preparing to fight to save their school, that may or may not be on the chopping block.

According to acting Principal Sharette Flynn, every school that's been considered for closure, has had a chance to defend itself and says now it's Southside's turn.

"They were allowed an opportunity for their parents and students to speak, we want to have the same opportunity to speak for our school," says Flynn.

Flynn says she has it on good authority that at Tuesday's board meeting, it will be moved that Southside be shutdown.

"Rumors have spread, that we are being targeted to be closed," says Flynn.

This comes after several different plans have been announced to close Henry V. Adams and Cherry Ridge Elementaries, along with significant staff reductions, and possibly going to a 4-day school week. That's all in an effort to make up for a $4.2 million deficit.

Superintendent George Noflin tells KNOE that he thinks the plan presented at Tuesday's meeting will be final. He could not confirm whether closing Southside is a part of that agenda, or not.

Either way, Southside is preparing to fight.

"Call everybody you know, put it on your facebook page, send them a text message, send them an email," Flynn says as she gives parents and teachers their marching orders, "they're not just going to run over us... We are going to send a message to everybody, let them know, that we are going to fight for our school."

The next school board meeting is set for Tuesday, April 1, at 5:30pm at the Madison Parish Resource Center.
