Great American Clean Up begins with hazardous materials

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) -To kick off this year's Great American Clean Up, people in Ouachita Parish aretossing out the trash for Household Hazardous Waste Day.

This event is only held oncea year, because it cost at least $20,000 to dispose of the hazardous wastematerials.

"The biggest thing ispure environmental safety issue. Like the paints, you dispose of themimproperly and that leaches into the ground. That goes into the ground water, which goes into the streams, bayous, rivers, so it is a big hazard as far asthat is concerned," Gregg Smith with Keep Monroe Beautiful said.

The group recycleseverything it can and properly disposes everything else.

There was a steady line ofcars at ULM's campus, to drop off everything from paint, pesticides andhousehold cleaners, to bigger items like tires, refrigerators and electronics.

TheGreat American Clean Up effort will continue on April 12, when volunteers willpick up trash throughout Ouachita Parish
