Posted: Updated:

UPDATE:

TALLULAH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Another new candidate has qualified in the mayoral race in Tallulah.

Gerald Michael Lott, Jr., (NP) has entered the race, now set for May 3, 2014.

Along with another newcomer Sandra Cannon-Scott (D), Lott is facing Paxton Branch (D), Arthur Lee (D), John "Elbow" Reed (D), and Adell Williams (D).

Previous Story:

TALLULAH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A new candidate has stepped forward in the mayor's race in Tallulah, meaning the election day for that race is now May 3, 2014.

After the death of two-term Mayor Eddie Beckwith, Jr., who was currently running for another term, the Secretary of State re-opened the qualifying period for Friday, March 28 through Tuesday, April 1.

So far, one new candidate has qualified. Sandra "Sue" Cannon-Scott has thrown her hat into the ring.  Cannon-Scott was an educator with Madison Parish schools and is the president of the Madison Association of Educators.

"Because I'm an educator, I believe education is key, but I believe in the bigger picture not just education, we have to look at economic development, getting jobs for people in Madison Parish," says Cannon-Scott.

She originally supported another candidate in the race, and says she was first in line for early voting, but she now feels this is her opportunity to step forward.

"Someone else has to step up to the plate, and after listening to your broadcast yesterday evening, and hearing the options... then I said 'If I'm a proponent for change and on a mission to better my community, then now is the time for change.' I think Tallulah needs to be transformed and it needs to be a collective effort," says Cannon-Scott.

Yesterday, she released the following statement regarding the death of Mayor Beckwith, "The members of the Madison Association of Educators (MAE) extend sympathy to the Beckwith Family in the passing of The Honorable Mayor of Tallulah Eddie Beckwith who today became absent from his body and present with The Lord."

The election for the mayor's race will now be on May 3, 2014. All other races in Madison Parish will continue as scheduled on April 5, 2014.
