Greatest Southern town’s competition

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) -There is a national competition taking place to find the greatest southern town in the country. Garden and Gun Magazine has published its bracket and is asking everyone to vote. As our Nolan Crane reports the city of Monroe is in the final 16 and just three steps away from bringing home the title.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo takes pride in his city from new businesses moving in, redeveloping downtown, a beautiful garden district and colorful flowers in between.

"There is no question that the city of Monroe is one of the best southern cities in the entire United States," said Mayor Mayo.

City leaders want the rest of the world to know about Monroe. They hope the city will continue to advance in this bracket and win the title of the greatest southern town.

"The spirit of competition is always good and we certainly hope that we're able to win it and we're asking all of our community folks not only here in the city of Monroe but also West Monroe and the parish to vote. Vote for Monroe," said Mayo.

"We want to get involved, we want to win and we've made it through the first bracket and moving to the second. Now we've got steep competition and that is Natchitoches so were going to have to put an extra effort out there to vote and make sure we move to the third bracket," said Sue Nicholson.

In addition to the beautiful flowers, well-kept schools and a good public transit system Mayor Mayo says there is a lot more the city has to offer that people should consider when they vote.

"This is one of the first west of the Mississippi where Coca Cola was bottled and also the birthplace of delta airlines and great university. The University of Louisiana at Monroe," said Mayo.

The voting is open until Thursday March 27th. The eight cities to advance will be announced Friday. To cast your ballot visit this link
