Sandoval to visit ASU jazz fest

VICKSBURG, MS (KNOE 8 News) - The Alcorn State University Jazz Festival is a masterpiece rich in tradition and talent. Jazz masters like Clark Terry, Max Roach, Slide Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Louie Bellson, Donald Byrd, Ramsey Lewis, and Stanley Turrentine have graced the stage of this free event throughout its history. These performers have helped establish the ASU Jazz Festival as a true gem and premier jazz event in the region.

Arturo Sandoval is one of world's leading jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players as well as being a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, winner of ten Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award for composing the score of the HBO movie based on his life, "For Love or Country" starring Andy Garcia.

Arturo is one of the world's most dynamic and vivacious live performers. He was seen by millions at the Oscars performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy Awards as a leader, at the Billboard Awards, at the Super bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle and with leading symphony orchestras around the world. He has performed and recorded with everyone from jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Woody Herman and Woody Shaw to diverse performers like Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Kenny G, Rod Stewart, Tito Puente, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and many others.

His compositions and performances can be heard on many soundtracks such as "Havana", "Random Hearts", "Mambo Kings". He was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose numerous works. Last August, President Barack Obama announced that Arturo Sandoval would be a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Arturo is one of the most prominent, brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time.
