Louisiana Delta becomes accredited welding test center

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana Delta Community College has earned accreditation as an American Welding Society test facility.

In the field of construction, welders play a very big role, and those hiring are looking for the best of the best. You can earn that title by being certified, and now, whether you're a student or not, you can get that stamp of approval at Louisiana Delta.

In south Louisiana, major construction projects mean thousands of jobs for welders.

"All total they are looking at 85,000 construction jobs, of those 36,000 are welders," says Workforce Development Director Bob Hammack.

He says simply having the skills, or even a technical diploma, may not be enough for some employers.

"Those companies are specifying that those welders must be AWS certified. Unfortunately, in Louisiana there are not that many AWS test centers," says Bob Hammack.

One near New Orleans, another in Shreveport, but now Louisiana Delta is on the list and proud to be the only test center on a college campus.

Once the gear is on, behind the red safety curtain is where the testing takes place, and it's the next step in their careers.

"This means that all of our students that are enrolled in welding have the opportunity to leave with the highest standard in the industry," says Hammack.

The test isn't just for students, but for any welder looking to become certified - an achievement that could land you your next job.

"It's not unusual to find people making up to a 6-digit income," says Hammack, "The standards that welders have to meet, they are craftsmen but they are also artists."
