PIONEER, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Governor Bobby Jindal visited this part of the state to officially open abridge near Poverty Point.

Governor Jindal said the newWest Carroll Parish Bridge will help economic development and shows growinginfrastructure in the area.

After two years ofconstruction, the bridge on Highway 134 is essentially complete.

SherriLeBas with the Department of Transportation and Development said the new deck bridge should help area farmers.

"It's going to allowthe facilitation of farming equipment to go over the bridge, not to have todetour because of the height restrictions of the truss bridge that was therebefore," LeBas said.

The new $4.6-million bridgereplaces the old existing bridge.

Around 720 vehicles a day will drive across thenew bridge and Gov. Jindal said it's a benefit to those living in the area andthe state as a whole.

"That bridge is morethan 50 years old. That is the kind of bridge where we've got to makeinvestments. For too long we've had bridges and roads across the state thathave not been invested in, haven't been upgraded. It's not safe anymore. It'snot good for our families. It's not good for our economy. It's not good forcommerce," Jindal said.

The bridge is open but thework is not complete. Weather permitting it should be finished within a month.

LeBas also said it'simportant for the DOTD to improve both rural and urban parts of the statebecause both significantly affect the state's economy.
