STERLINGTON, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The town of Sterlington has received approval from the state bond commission to borrow $1.5 million from Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality for a sewer expansion project along its major business corridor.

The project is one Mayor Vern Breland has pushed for a number of years as the U.S. 165 business corridor is a major focus for future economic development.

The town will borrow the money from DEQ at a less than 1 percent interest rate with plans to pay off the debt over 20 years.

The project is expected to be completed within 180 days, but Breland believes it could be finished sooner. Construction could begin in June.
