MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- The deadline to sign up for health insurance, without being penalized, isquickly approaching. And for those who haven't signed up, Humana is offeringfree forums to discuss the changes and options available before time runs outon March 31.

Financial assistance, likeMedicaid, the CHIP program, and federal subsidies are available, but eligibilityfor those is tricky, but mostly based on income and family size.

If your income falls belowa certain line, Medicaid or CHIP may be options. For an individual that line isset around $11,000. For a family of two, the line is set at a little more than$15,000. With each additional family member that income cut-off increases. But eventhose that fall into those categories may still be out of luck, since Louisianaopted out of Medicaid expansion.

And if you don't haveinsurance by April 1, fines are set at $95 per adult, $48 per child or onepercent of your income, whichever is greater. Each year those fines increase, upto about $700.

The government willvalidate your health insurance and income through various agencies such as theIRS and the Social Security Administration.
