Spring Market

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) -The 16th annual Spring Market started Friday at the Civic Center and it goes on throughout the weekend. Last year the Junior League of Monroe raised more than $151,000 for local non-profit organizations. Nolan crane went shopping and shows us why for a lot of vendors attending is a tradition.

The Monroe Civic Center has been transformed into a shopping center with booths filling the arena from vendors all across the country.

"We do have local merchants, people who are right here in town but we have people from South Dakota, some of the Carolina's. We have people who are from further down South, then right here in the Ark-La-Miss and we are expecting to see a great turnout this weekend from over 100 merchants," said Meghan Sharp.

For most of the vendors setting up shop for the spring market is an annual tradition.

"I've been to this show for the past 13 years. It's a very good event, a lot of people come out, they have thousands of people that come out during the three day event. This week it's great weather and it's for a great cause because the ladies of the junior league do a lot of good things for the community," said Patricia Willis.

Thurman Dicky has been at this event almost every year as both a shopper and a food cattier, but today is his first time selling jewelry.

"We're going out on a little limb this year. We're doing the spring market that's here every year but this is our first year to have a booth in it," said Thurman Dicky.

Last year the junior league helped raise more than $150,000 for local charities because of this market. Vendors say they are also in business because they can help all of us find something that we would like.

"There's things for everybody, for men, woman, children. I have children's clothing and hair bows. I've made hair bows for 27 years," said Willis.

If you want to look at the bows or clothes the spring market will be taking place all weekend. The doors to the Civic Center will open from 9am to 6pm Saturday and then Sunday from noon to 5pm. Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door.
