FORT POLK, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Wednesday morning, Fort Polk postal officials notified emergency services that suspicious mail, with misspelled words and addresses, had been received at the mailroom.

Fire and police patrols responded immediately and the Explosive Ordnance Detachment also was summoned to the scene. The postal building was cleared and cordoned off, and personnel began checking ID cards of all personnel entering and leaving Fort Polk as a precaution.

Officials report that no explosives were found inside the package or building. The package was also cleared for chemical and biological contaminants.

Brig. Gen. William B. Hickman, commanding general of the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, recognized the vigilance of postal workers and the quick response by emergency personnel. "It takes a cooperative effort to respond," he said, "and to resolve promptly and decisively any potential threats to our community."
