FARMERVILE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - One of the two escapees from the Union Parish Detention Center has been arrested in the Phoenix, Arizona area and a search is on for the second.

Sheriff Dusty Gates said Benjamin J. Morana, 39, of Junction City, was captured when Mesa Police Department officers responded to a complaint about a suspicious person being involved with narcotics.

Gates said information obtained from Morana indicated that his escape partner, Thomas Kinnaird Jr., 36, of Ruston, also is in the Phoenix area.

Morana and Kinnaird, state Department of Corrections prisoners, escaped from the detention center Feb. 22. Gates said it is believed someone was waiting for them in a vehicle on a nearby road.

Gates said that Morana was captured late Wednesday afternoon and was being held in the Scottsdale Police Department's jail until he is transferred to the Maricopa County Jail to await a court appearance and extradition back to Union Parish where he will be charged with simple escape.

He faces no charges in Arizona.

Gates said the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and law enforcement agencies from the Phoenix area are now searching for Kinnaird.

Kinnaird was serving time for burglary while Morana was serving time for aggravated incest.
