Lawmakers speak out on Common Core

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Essentially common core will raise standards in education by making school harder for students.  Even though it sounds great in theory, many educators are opposed to it because they say it expects too much from students too soon.

And our lawmakers are also at odds with this education reform.

"I have conflicting emotions about common core. There are pluses and minuses," Representative Frank Hoffman said.

Both Representative Frank Hoffman and Representative Bubba Chaney said they have concerns, but will keep open minds when it comes to Common Core.

"We have to do it where we get a buy-in from our local superintendents, our educators, our teachers, our boots on the ground. If they reach a comfort level with it, then they will be able to teach it with fidelity and that's important. If you don't believe in it, I can't sell something if I don't believe in it," Chaney said.

And Senator Bob Kostelka said he is most definitely opposed to common core.

"The teachers have been forced to teach to the test, and the teachers' livelihood depends on what grade their kids make on these tests. We've put the cart before horse. We've implemented it too fast. I think it needs to be stopped or delayed for considerable time until we know what we're talking about," Kostelka said.

In total, there are 65 bills being considered that deal with education. And some of them are aiming to repeal the common core curriculum or at least slow it down.
