Gardner Denver proposal back on council agenda

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - After being voted down last week, a proposal for renovations at Gardner Denver Thomas is back on the city council's agenda.

Councilman Ray Armstrong voted against the measure last week, but has put on the next agenda to reconsider that motion.

Also on the agenda, is a measure from Eddie Clark. He proposes the $400,000 for the project to come from city funds, instead of the I-20 board as it states in the cooperative endeavor agreement.

Mayor Jamie Mayo says using the general fund to pay for this project would put the city in a deficit. Mayo says the original agreement, that was signed off on last year, states that the I-20 board would pay for the project, making it free to the city.

The I-20 board's district has come into question, but an opinion by the Attorney General says it would be legal for the I-20 board to pay for this out-of-district improvement because it would benefit the I-20 corridor as well.

Thursday, Monroe businessman Eddie Hakim tells KNOE that he is offering the city an interest-free loan of $400,000 for the project.

Hakim says, "This takes away the argument over who should fund it."

Eddie Hakim says he doesn't expect the city to take him up on his offer, but it would stop the "blame game" between the mayor and council.

Mayor Jamie Mayo says he has not been formerly presented with any offer from Hakim, and can not comment on something he's never seen.
