Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth will not seek re-election

Posted: Updated:

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth has announced he will not run for re-election after serving 15 years in the office.  On Tuesday, Mayor Hollingsworth released the following statement:

I am taking this opportunity to announce that I will not be a candidate for reelection as Mayor of Ruston. I am making my decision public at this time so that anyone who is considering running for this position will have ample time to prepare a campaign for the fall. Even though the primary election is not until November 4, 2014, qualifying will take place in August 22, 2014, and I felt Ruston voters deserved candidates who had time to carefully consider this decision and make the necessary plans.

I have loved being your mayor, and the work we have been able to accomplish over the past fifteen years represents the most gratifying and fulfilling professional experience I have had. No one could have appreciated this opportunity more than I, nor have been humbled by your support all these years. With that said, it is time for me to step down, spend more time with my wife, children, and grandchildren, and let someone else enjoy the rewards of public service.

For anyone who is considering a possible run for this office, I am more than willing to meet with you, answer any questions about the job, introduce you to others in our administration, and brag on our city. Potential candidates should know that, if elected, you will be inheriting a staff committed to the growth of our city and service to our citizens.

For me, the remaining nine months of my tenure in office will be spent working as hard for Ruston's future as I can. We can all be proud of our city, and I thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve you. I should also like to thank those dedicated citizens who have accepted appointments and have served with distinction on the city's many boards and commissions during my tenure as Mayor. Your work has been absolutely essential.
