UNION PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Union Parish sheriff's deputies have made several drug and alcohol related arrests.

A traffic stop on Louisiana Hwy. 2 near the DeLoutre Bridge resulted in a Bastrop man being booked into the parish detention center on four felony drug-related charges.

Michael Dewayne Lyons, 26, was booked for possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana-second offense, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, introduction of contraband into a penal institution and speeding 76 mph in a 55 mph zone. The four drug charges are felonies.

His total bond was set at $16,000.

Sheriff Dusty Gates said the arresting deputy smelled burned marijuana coming from the car and saw a handgun in the glove box. When Lyons refused to let the deputy search the car, a K-9 unit was called to the scene.

K-9 Jack made a positive hit on the driver's side door where a white powdery substance was found that tested positive as cocaine, Gates said.

While being booked at the detention center, guards found a small bag of suspected marijuana in Lyons' genital area.

A Strong, Ark., man was arrested Feb. 28 for third offense driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest by flight, improper lane usage and driving under suspension. His bond was set at $29,500.

Billy C. King, 64, was followed by two reserve officers who observed his vehicle using both lanes of traffic on La. Hwy. 15 north of Farmerville. The reserve officers notified other deputies while continuing to follow King who had turned off on La. Hwy. 549.

The reserve deputies attempted for more than 1.5 miles to pull over the vehicle, which finally did stop. The suspect tested .173 on the Intoxilyzer 5000 when .09 is considered intoxicated.

In another DWI stop. Eugene Sims, 55, of 405 Marion St., Farmerville, was booked for second-offense DWI and for running a stop sign. His bond was set at $6,250.

The arresting deputy stated that he had to take evasive action to keep from hitting the car driven by Sims, which pulled out onto La. Hwy. 2 from Railroad Street in Farmerville.

His blood alcohol level registered .181 on the Intoxilyzer 5000.

Mickey Skains, 62, of 590 Pint Rd., Farmerville, was booked for his first offense DWI and public intimidation after a threatened to sue deputies for taking his blood. The deputies had to obtain a search warrant to draw Skains' blood.

Deputies also made an arrest Feb. 28 on a warrant that was issued for the arrest of Kenneth W. Rogers, 34, of 2515 Kavanaugh Rd., Ruston, in December 2012 charging him with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Rogers is accused of helping a teenage girl run-away by picking her up at her mother's residence and leaving without gaining permission. His bond was set at $4,500.
