WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Ouachita Parish Superintendent of Schools confirms legendary West Monroe High School Football Coach Don Shows has passed away.

Superintendent Bob Webber tells KNOE 8 News that Shows passed away Monday morning. Webber says he visited Shows last week and that Shows had been ill. Webber says Shows had been in and out of the hospital over the past several months. Webber says, "Don was more than a coach, he was a great guy." Webber was not yet aware of funeral plans for Shows.

The former coach has struggled with health issues over the past few years. Shows suffered a concussion in November 2012 during West Monroe's playoff run, and was hospitalized in April 2013 when he suffered a stroke.

West Monroe Assistant Football Coach Jerry Arledge became the Rebels head coach in the 2013 season. Shows remained on staff as the school's athletic director, but always vowed he would return to the sidelines."When my health returns, I will return to being the head football coach at West Monroe.  Because of the unknown right now I think this is the best thing to do, but my plan is to come back in January as the head coach," shows told KNOE's Aaron Dietrich in 2013.

Shows led the Rebels to eight state championships since 1989.
