Students participate in a mock trial competition

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Today was a lesson in law for some high school students competing in a mock trial.

West Monroe, Loyola Prep, Caddo Magnet and Huntington high schools gathered at the Four Judicial District courthouse in Downtown Monroe.

Each school had teams of three arguing their cases in front of volunteer judges.

Students are scored on their abilities in the courtroom skills that can be used in any career these students may choose.

"Our youth is our future spokespersons, lawyers and judges. And the training this affords them also allows them an opportunity to learn self-confidence because it is difficult to speak to others in public. And it makes them comfortable in whatever situation they may be in, in the future," attorney Shereba Diaz said.

After a knock-out round of eliminations, one team will advance to the state competition in Shreveport.
