Buddy Caldwell speaks out about SNAP benefits

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell met today with U.S. Senator David Vitter, Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Director Suzy Sonnier, and Louisiana District Attorneys Association (LDAA) Director Pete Adams to discuss abuses of the Louisiana Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that occurred on October 12, 2013. Attorney General Caldwell offers the following statement:

"I appreciate and share Senator Vitter's concern over abuses of the Louisiana food stamp program. We discussed today the actions that have already been taken and potential actions to come. To date, six people have been removed from Louisiana SNAP after abusing the service on October 12, 2013, and more people are being investigated.

"However, in Louisiana, original criminal jurisdiction is vested in the district attorneys throughout the state, rather than the Attorney General's office, so our role is constitutionally limited. Still, we have reached out to the Louisiana District Attorney's Association and offered our assistance to the affected district attorneys going forward. We appreciate the continued efforts of Senator Vitter and DCFS Director Sonnier in this matter."
