Jonesboro councilman arrested on drug and weapons charges

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Town Councilman LaStevic Cottonham is in custody in Jackson Parish after a traffic stop Thursday morning.

A sheriff deputy pulled Cottonham over after running his license and seeing that he was driving under suspension. During the stop, deputies found marijuana and a firearm. Sheriff Andy Brown says both charges of driving under suspension and possession are misdemeanors, but the illegal carrying of a firearm in possession of drugs is a felony. Bond has yet to be set for that felony.

Sheriff Brown says bond must be set within 72 hours of Cottonham's arrest, and until then, Cottonham will remain at the Jackson Parish Jail.

This comes the same week as an alleged rape that occurred at Cottonham's home.
