New program may lessen your wait time during a traffic accident

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - We've all been stuck in traffic because of a blocked road and we all know how frustrating it is. But now, Louisiana is joining many other states by participating in a new traffic incident management system that could lessen your wait time and prevent accidents.

Louisiana is joining 33 other states in participating in the Federal Highway Administration's Traffic Incident Management System.

Albert Paxton with the state police says the system has three main goals: to keep everyone safe, quickly clear the roads, and to communicate reliable information to each other and the general public.

State police and the Department of Transportation and Development have begun training sessions with other agencies and even private businesses that work the crashes. Paxton said this system will create a uniform code of response.

"The sheriff's office doesn't have a different way of doing things as the state police does. Or one fire department doesn't have different policies on how to set up at a crash scene than another fire department. All agencies have the same policies and techniques when they arrive on scene," Paxton said.

Paxton says for drivers, this system will mean less congested roads during crashes. And agencies are being trained to take-up only the amount of road they need, and only close the road when they have to.

And to communicate with the public, Paxton says state police use social media and a text message alert system. To sign up for text messages on roadway issues, go to nixle.com/louisiana-state-police-troop-f.
