Estate sale offers furniture with political history

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Most of us have had our share of garage sale visits and you never know what you might find, but this estate sale in Monroe is a little different.

Ramona Caldwell has a passion for beautiful things, and for 20 years she's made that passion her full-time job. This week we find her at a Garden District home.

"This house was built around 1904 by the Trousdale family," says Caldwell.

A block away from the Ouachita River, it makes the National Registry of Historic Places, and inside everything is up for grabs.

"This one may be a little different because there are some special pieces, but when I do an estate sale, it is to get everything sold," says Caldwell about special item like a 7-piece set that once sat in the original governor's mansion.

"We know that it left in the 1920s when Huey Long took office. Supposedly he threw it on the side of the road, and said that's not what he wanted in his governor's mansion," says Caldwell.

"The full tester bed in the master bedroom is a C. Lee signed bed, Charles Lee, and there are several stories about him, whether he was a slave of Prudent Mallard or a furniture maker from somewhere else," says Caldwell.

One of the stories surrounding the mysterious furniture maker is that he worked for a prominent New Orleans craftsman, and because of his talents was granted his freedom and allowed to sign his own work.

"At least anywhere from $35,000 and up, and this one is $14,500," says Caldwell.

A heavy price tag, but every digit carries a piece of history. Caldwell hopes that the new owners will add to the story.

The estate sale is on Hudson Lane, and will continue this weekend. It's open Saturday 9am to 3pm, and Sunday noon to 3pm.
