TIP #4 Consistent Routine
According to Master Schill, the owner of Peak Performance Summer Camp in Cedar Park, TX, the summer months are a great time to keep routines going to ensure a successful beginning to the upcoming school year. In addition, they will ensure your child maintains their academic levels, exercise and weight control.
There is proven concept that says Begin with the end in mind. Too many times we get to the end of the summer, school starts and we realize that our children are not getting to sleep on time, they are tire and cranky in the morning prior to school and it takes them a couple of weeks to get acclimated to the new routine.
Routines are a must for children to be successful. However, the summer months are the hardest. Without school, the routines get out of alignment. Bed times get pushed, academia studies go into remission and eating habits suffer. In addition, the usual chores and responsibilities get a little lax.
According to Master Schill, children feel more safe, comfortable and confident when their routines are consistent. They act out less often, because they know where they stand all of the time. Children do not possess the communication skill sets yet to communicate when they are experiencing some anxiety, so they act out instead.
Going back to the Begin with the End in Mind Concept. Start with their bed time and reverse engineer their evenings activities based upon their bed time. You can then schedule all of the necessary evening requirements, i.e, dinner, reading, brushing their teeth, free time, etc.
This same concept can be used for the morning routine as well. Start with the time you want to leave the house and reverse engineer the routine to calculate the most convenient wake up time.
Every now and again, the routine will get mixed up, it is unavoidable. If you know there is going to be an adjustment to the routine, communicate this with your child as far in advance as possible. Think about the feeling experienced when our routines are modified at the last minute. Children experience the same feelings. Human beings are creatures of habits and when they are modified, there is a sense of anxiety that sets in.
In a good summer camp, they will have very consistent routines. The children will know where they stand all of the time and what is expected of them. This will have a positive effect on their day.
