Troop returns from Afghanistan and surprises daughter in Choudrant

CHOUDRANT, La. (KNOE 8 News)- At first glimpse you wouldn't know that platoon Sergeant Henry Willrich is very nervous.

He just returned home from Afghanistan after being there for 15 months and is about to surprise his daughter at her school.

Willrich serves in the National Guard as a flight medic.

During his tour he has anticipated this day for a while.
today it became reality.

In 2008 Willrich was diagnosed with cancer, and did not deploy with his unit.

With two daughters and a wife at home the illness did not stop him from applying for a waiver in 2012 and being deployed to serve his country in Afghanistan.

"I was told on this deployment that I shouldn't go but I fought for a waiver because it's important to me what I signed up to do. It's my job," Willrich said.

For Willrich's daughter Keira this will be time well spent with her hero first having a slumber party watching movies and playing with toys of course.

Sergeant Willrich will have his hands full with his two daughters but it's been long awaited for 15 months.
