Bastrop planning to develop old paper mill land

Posted: Updated:

BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News)- In Morehouse Parish 140 acres that used to be Bastop's International Paper Mill.

The mill closed in 2008 and took with it 1-thousand jobs.

Bastrop native Max Summerville remembers when the mill was the city's economic engine.

"This town cannot exist without what was here I hope that only one third of what was here will come back because that will give what's left of Bastrop at least a graceful existence."

The city along with the Morehouse Economic Development District hope to once again bring jobs to this land but first they have to ask international paper to donate the property.

In that council meeting all sorts of ideas were brain stormed.

Like a sports complex, an r-v park, and restaurants or hotels.

Whatever it is...they hope it will draw people to the city.
