UPDATE:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - In a story we first brought you last night, we're learning a witness has come forward about the shots fired in a big gathering of about 200 juveniles and a fight last night in a south Monroe park.

The witness tells police they saw a gun being fired in Johnson Park, but police still don't have any leads.

While this may seem like a scary incident, especially in a family-friendly park, some neighborhood residents are not that shocked.

Leroy Handy lives about a mile from the park and uses it to exercise three times a week. He says he was shocked by the number of juvenile's in the park this time of year, but said he doesn't feel like the park is unsafe.

"Some of them I know, some of them I don't know. But the ones I don't know, are very friendly," Handy said.

Jeremy Williams has been visiting the park for years to play basketball. He said Monday night's events don't shock him.

"When summertime comes around that's when everything starts happening," Williams said.

Mark Johnson with the Monroe Police Department said the majority of individuals that visit this park just want to have a good time and not cause any trouble.

"The numbers make it look kind of bad but it was probably down to a couple of individuals and we would like to get our hands on those individuals but we don't know who they are," Johnson said.

Johnson also said the crowd fanned out to other parts of town, where the police received other calls of shots fired, a hit and run and one boy was beaten so badly his jaw is broke.

He said there is nothing unusual, or illegal about such a large crowd of juveniles gathering at a public park, especially when the weather is nice and they are out of school.

Williams said for the most part, the park does give kids something to do, if they want to stay out of trouble. Williams also said the park gives people a place to hang out and find trouble.

And Handy said that's all young adults need, something to keep them preoccupied.
