Paws raises money with pet parade

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - With the help of Paws of Northeast Louisiana our four-legged friends had a Mardi Gras celebration of their own.

They were small, they were big and most were furry.

For the eighth year, Paws of Northeast Louisiana held its biggest fundraiser, the Mardi Gras Pet Parade.

President Jo Traylor says it was a perfect day for the event, and the planning is worth it.

"It is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We go all out for the parade we start planning at least three months in advance. And it takes a lot of work. It's a lot of fun but it's a lot of work to get this together and make a very safe parade," Traylor said.

Traylor says the money raised will go to the paws programs.

"We have spayed/neuter low income assistance. We have a shelter pet rescue program, a tag your pet program and as well as a pet therapy program," Traylor said.

The team is raising money with parades entry fees, T-shirts and some sponsors were selling raffle tickets.

"It's a marvelous event for people to come out with their pets. Dress up and enjoy good weather," Traylor said.

Paws takes donations for their programs year round and they work in conjunction with the parish animal shelter. Traylor says their main goal is to promote responsible pet ownership.

And at the end of the day it's all about the dogs, big or small and of course, in costume.
