Ice is falling

Posted: Updated:

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Temperatures are a lot warmer Thursday and I saw the sun for the first time all week. Up until now the ground has caused the problems for commuters as roads.... bridges ...and overpasses were closed. As our Nolan Crane reports there are still some potential hazards as the ice melts, but it's coming from up above.

Tree removal companies are busy hauling away limbs that fell on homes during this weeks icy weather…but the falling isn't only limited to branches. In this video you can see chunks of ice falling off of towers in Monroe. Telephone poles and awnings have sharp icicles dangling which can be dangerous because it's not a matter of if they fall, but when they fall.

"Some of the ice that falls is considerable in size, especially when you're on the interstate you have it coming off those big trucks. Just be careful, it's going to happen throughout the day and there's not much we can do. Just drive safe," said Marshall Hill.

DOTD employees have worked around the clock using more than 300,000 pounds of salt, costing almost $30,000 to keep the streets open. Now that conditions have improved they recommend you clean your car.

"When you're riding today you'll see some of that ice still on the side of the road and most of that on the bridges has salt in it. What happens, is those tires pick it up and it throws it under your car and the rain water isn't going to get that off. What you need to do is take it to a car wash, spray it off the best you can," said Hill.

It might be okay to clean your car but employees at the LSU AgCenter say do not clean the ice off of your trees.

"You just kind of have to wait until it melts off. There is no point in shaking it or doing anything like that. You can do more damage to the limbs and to the leaves if you go out and shake it," said Steven Hotard.

If you leave your home today make sure you look up to make sure nothing is coming down so you can stay safe.

Employees at DOTD recently finished clearing several miles of trees from I-20. They credit their preparation as one reason majority of I-20 remained opened during the winter weather.
