NEW ORLEANS (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The man who succeeded Ray Nagin as mayor of New Orleans says Nagin's conviction marks a "very sad day" for the people of the city.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the statement Wednesday after Nagin was convicted on 20 criminal counts. The crimes were committed during the two terms Nagin served, from 2001 to 2010.

Landrieu, who lost an election to Nagin in 2006, was elected in a landslide four years later to replace the term-limited Nagin.

Landrieu said his administration is "moving forward" and "restoring the public's trust in government."
