UPDATE: 7:35: State Police have confirmed that the Mississippi River Bridge has opened in both the eastbound and westbound directions.

UPDATE: 6:45:  The wreckage is still continuing to be cleaned at the site of Wednesday morning's crash.  One lane of east bound traffic is open.

UPDATE 3:30 PM:  Crews are still working to clean up the accident from Wednesday morning. State Police have clarified what chemical was housed in the trailer.   The chemical is a waste flammable liquid, corrosive N.O.S. acetonitrile, sodium hydroxide.

UPDATE FROM DOTD: Two tow trucks have arrived to help remove the tanker trailer from the bridge.  DOTD officials estimate that it will be 90+ minutes before the bridge reopens.

UPDATE FROM LSP: State police tell KNOE 8 News the leak from the damaged tanker has been stopped. However, the bridge does remain closed.

Previous Report:

Wednesday morning at 4:00 AM on Interstate 20 westbound on the Mississippi River Bridge, there was a crash involving six eighteen wheelers, one carrying a corrosive/flammable liquid material that was struck in the rear.

This severed the liquid line on the tanker. This hazardous liquid material is leaking into the river. Cleanup crews and hazardous material personnel are on scene. Even though the crash occurred in Louisiana multiple agencies from Louisiana and Mississippi are assisting with this incident.

State police officials say the hazardous material spilled is chloropropionic acid, which is used in the agriculture and pharmaceutical industries.

There have been several other crashes that occurred on the bridge after the initial crash. There have been multiple injuries though none fatal and multiple vehicles.  The bridge has been evacuated and the Coast Guard closed the Mississippi River to water traffic at 5:55 a.m. The weather is slowing the cleanup and we do not have an estimated time for when the bridge will be reopened.  We will reopen the bridge as soon as it is safe to do so.

Earlier Stories:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana State Police are busy clearing wreckage from a crash on the Mississippi River bridge. The accident is on the Louisiana side of the bridge.

Albert Paxton with LSP says several vehicles are involved, including an 18 wheeler that is leaking a liquid into the river. There is no word yet what that liquid is leaking.

Louisiana and Mississippi hazmat teams are on the scene. A one half mile radius has been evacuated for safety precautions.

Traffic is being diverted east bound at Tallulah to Highway 80. At this point, the only way across the river is Natchez to the south and Greenville, Mississippi to the north by Highway 65.
