THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - College and middle-school students are benefiting from Nicholls State University's online tutoring program.

Students majoring in education are getting classroom teaching experience while helping kids with their class work through the Colonel Chats program that started about three years ago.

Using a Google platform, the Nicholls students are assigned a child whose teacher informs them about what learning is needed.

Next week, fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade at-risk students at Fifth Ward Elementary School in St. James Parish start a seven-week semester of tutoring.

Cynthia Vavasseur, assistant professor of education and program innovator, says she hasn't decided whether tutoring will be done two or three times a week.
