Public transportation in West Ouachita Parish

Posted: Updated:

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Getting where you need to go for just $7 a month sounds like a deal too good to be true. It's all a lot of people living in West Ouachita Parish need to pay. Almost $4 million in grants are helping the West Ouachita Parish Transportation System provide very affordable bus service. Our Nolan Crane explains how you can get on board.

As Jerry Crockett gets older she finds new hobbies like crocheting to keep her busy. Thanks to the West Ouachita Senior Center's Transportation Service she can make a blanket and talk with fellow passengers without having to be behind the wheel.

"The bus picks me up every day," said Crockett.

Whether you pay per ride or buy a monthly pass, riders say it's very affordable.

"I get a $7 pass a month because being a senior citizen," said Crockett.

"Oh, let me tell you something. I don't think they charge enough because you cannot get someone to take you somewhere for this price," said Alice Minniefield.

Riders say they feel like VIP's because they don't have to wait out in the cold and it works a lot like a taxi service.

"We provide curb-to-curb service. They need to call, it's Monday through Friday...from seven to five and they need to call 24 hours in advance," said Jeanette Ellington.

With several million dollars in grants the West Ouachita Senior Center received four new buses, money to pay the drivers, state of the art gps equipment to monitor all of the buses in real time and video cameras. The big investment means these passengers will be able to get around town for a long time to come.

"If it wasn't for transportation I don't know what I'd do," said Minniefield.

You do not have to be a senior to use the buses and the cost for a one way trip is about a buck per person. You do have to live in West Ouachita Parish.

A one-way ticket cost $1 per ride.

You can buy a ten ride pass which cost $8.

There is a special discount for seniors or people who are disabled where a ride only cost fifty cents.

You can purchase a monthly pass for only $7.

Children under the age of three are free if they are accompanied by an adult.
