Tom Joyner donates 50K to GSU

GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Thanks to a donation from All State Insurance and Tom Joyner, 32 Grambling State University students will continue their goal of graduating.

This past year Grambling State along with 104 other historically black colleges and universities were in a contest to see who had the most school spirit.

The winning school would receive a 50 thousand dollar check.

Grambling State beat out Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and 32 students at GSU are the lucky recipients of a 1 thousand dollar scholarship.

"I very much appreciate it, it's something that is much needed because I'm actually in the need of some money very in dyer need to further my education here at Grambling so I can complete my semester,"Grambling student Andre Merille said.

The Grambling Tiger Band was loud and clear when radio personality Tom Joyner made his entrance into the auditorium. Joyner believes it's his duty to give back to schools like Grambling.

"When I became able to give back to my institution to my community and then expand it to over 105 HBCU's that's why I do it because I don't who will," Joyner said.

The students who received scholarships all had grade point averages of 3.0 or better.
