Morgan City Police Chief shoots himself, unsure if accident or suicide

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Biloxi police say the police chief of Morgan City, La., shot himself and died in a casino hotel, but it was not clear whether the shooting was suicide or an accident.

Sgt. Chris De Back tells The Associated Press in a telephone interview that a member of Chief Travis Crouch's party went into Crouch's room and found his body about 11:05 p.m. Friday.

He says there was no suicide note but would not give details about what police found. He says it was clear that nobody else shot Crouch.

De Back says the person who found Crouch was not sharing Crouch's room at the Beau Rivage.

Morgan City Assistant Chief Michael Banks says the 46-year-old police chief was on leisure time in Biloxi. He told a news conference Saturday that Crouch had begun innovative and positive changes in the department.
