Metairie Krewe's low funds mean no parade, Janus responds

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Beads and big floats, it's what we look forward to every Mardi Gras season, but the big costs may mean fewer parades in Louisiana.

A lot of money, goes in to keeping Mardi Gras floats rolling.

"Have to have the liability insurance, have to have a place for the floats to be," says Steve Courteau with the Krewe of Janus in Monroe, "The floats actually belong to the krewe, the floats are built by the krewe and are store all year long just for this one event annually."

Although this parade brings in people by the RV load every year, it has little financial support.

"On average, over a hundred thousand people, it's the largest single event you'll see in this area," says Courteau.

While krewes have the attention of those wanting to see a great parade roll by, or catch some beads, across Louisiana these krewes aren't seeing the right kind of interest to keep their floats afloat.

"We raise our own funds to put the parade on and events, and in year's past we did bingo, it was our big money raiser," says Courteau.

It's the same fundraiser the Krewe of Atlas in Metairie has used for years to fund it's parade, but this year, the money just isn't there causing Atlas to cancel it's parade.

"I can feel their pain, because we stopped having bingo this year at the end of December," says Courteau, "If we had not done other fundraisers, if we weren't prepared for that, we'd possibly be in the same predicament. It was actually discussed at one point."

Lacking corporate and community sponsors, it's a very real possibility that the beads won't be flying one year in the Twin Cities.
