Feeding and clothing people in need

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Every Friday members of Faith Tabernacle Church cook food and clean out their closets to help people in need. Although their soup kitchen is small, their hearts are big. Our Nolan Crane went with volunteers as they delivered 200 hot meals.

Volunteers at Faith Tabernacle Church in Monroe spent the day preparing to-go plates for people in need. They say the food they put in their cars and distribute doesn't only taste good but it's also high quality.

"Our ladies got together and they can cook. It's like your mom inviting you to her house and cooking you a great meal and that's what they prepare for all of these folks that need food," said Pastor John Jones.

"We do not serve anything that we wouldn't eat ourselves," said Wanda Matthews.

Putting food in people's stomachs is only one part of the service church members offer. They also put clothes on people's backs.

"They have top notch clothing that we wear ourselves and we clean out of closets," said Matthews.

"We have feed so many people today and put jackets on folks that wouldn't have those," said Jones.

The people who receive these generous gifts are grateful for the acts of kindness and many plan on making this a tradition.

"I have plans to come back in the future," said Terry Johnson.

The pastor of Faith Tabernacle Church says his church members are just practicing what they preach.

"The ones that are really in need, we were able to reach out to them, that's what it's really about. It's not about church inside the walls. Church is outside the walls and what do we do outside? Feed them and clothe the hungry," said Jones.

If you want something to eat or new clothes the volunteers are extending the invitation to everyone. Church members start feeding people on Fridays from 10 am until 1 pm. Today the menu consisted of red beans and rice and next Friday it will be chili.
