Community meeting held in south Monroe

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - People in south Monroe were able to voice their concerns at the city's first community meeting of 2014 on Thursday evening.

City department heads were in attendance at Benoit Community Center to give updates and let people know what's ahead for the year.  That includes a new splash park at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo and a new fire station for the Monroe City Fire Department.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo says these meetings are a necessary tool for community outreach.

"There are signs of progress throughout the city of Monroe," the mayor tells KNOE 8 News. "We want to point out some of those projects, but there are also some challenges we need to work on. We want to point out those too, but we want to listen to them to see what their issues and concerns are--and see how we can help them."

Mayor Mayo says he hopes to hold similar meetings in all of the city's districts throughout the remainder of the year.
