MANSFIELD, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Should alcohol sales be allowed in restaurants in Mansfield?

That's the question being posed to the city's residents during an open forum set for Monday. City leaders are prepared to ask the state Legislature for permission to put a local option election before voters, perhaps later this year.

Mayor Curtis McCoy said the option would be for restaurants only. McCoy says there would be no provisions in the legislation to open the city up to package liquor sales or bars.

The last time city leaders broached the sometimes controversial alcohol issue was in 2007. Then, a public forum was held to gauge reaction to all local options, not just restricted to restaurant sales. Strong opposition forced the council to drop the matter.
