Troy served as Monroe mayor from 1972-1976 after he retired from working as a mortgage banker.

According to friend and former colleague Dwight Vines, Troy died Sunday morning in Hendersonville, N.C., after a long battle with cancer.

Vines says, "Troy will certainly be missed." He went on to say that he spoke to Troy just a few weeks ago, when he told him that he was feeling well and was in good spirits.

"He recommended a book to me last time I talked to him," Vines says, "it was about the migration of people in the south and the history of a family from Monroe."
