Alpha Phi Alpha brothers meet in Monroe for state conference

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Alumni of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity were at the group's state conference Friday night.

Some of those were dishing out some of the same advice they wish they had heard in their younger years.

Benjamin Jones, Alvin Sharp, and Carl Sharp - while many know them as judges in the 4th Judicial District - at this conference they are proud alumni of Alpha Phi Alpha.

"My intention is to try to raise cautiousness about the importance of being attentive to financial issues," says Judge Jones.

Financial advice from Jones, family values and legal advice from the Sharp brothers.

"I always say and I said this one time earlier today... It's best for the judges to hear this on this side of the bench, than on the other side of the bench. to give us that advice on the other side, we don't want that," says state director Charles Stokes.

These judges give words of wisdom to other alumni but especially to those still in school, sitting in the same position they were once in.

"I was going to be a master of the universe. I think that phrase was around then," Carl Sharp told the audience.

"The subject area I'm talking about, I knew virtually nothing about in my college years, and had to learned as a young adult and made some mistakes," says Jones.

Jones says he knows this one speech may not change lives forever, but if someone learns something then maybe they can pay it forward to the generation ahead.

"If just one will listen and do what I tell them to do or not to do. It will all be worth while," says Jones.

Their state conference continues the rest of this weekend and Friday night, Alpha Phi Alphas from across the state performed at a step show at ULM.
