ALEXANDRIA, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A supplement to Mayor Jacques Roy's salary dominated discussion at a contentious Alexandria City Council committee meeting.

The supplement, of more than $13,000 annually, was part of the major budget amendment that came before the council this week. The amendment passed by a 4-3 vote.

When the amendment came up for discussion at the council's Finance and Legal Affairs Committee on Tuesday, three council members criticized the inclusion of the supplement.

The supplement, City Attorney Chuck Johnson and Finance Director David Johnson said, reflected a cost-of-living increase spelled out in the city charter.

Council members Jules Green, Ed Larvadain and Mitzi LaSalle argued against budgeting the supplement unless city employees were given a permanent raise. Employees were given a one-time pay supplement this year.
