Splash pad construction underway

Posted: Updated:

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - On a cold day it is hard to think about having fun in the sun, but employees at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo are getting prepared for the summer heat. Plans for a splash pad were made, money was allocated and now construction is underway. Nolan Crane shows us the progress and when it will open.

Rashaad Scott enjoys bringing his son to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo to see the different animals. He was surprised and excited when he saw these construction workers moving dirt, digging trenches and setting up this splash pad.

"In the summer time it does get hot here, so coming out to the zoo you have a spot where you can cool off, where you can have a little bit of fun and you can still enjoy the animals and learn a little bit more about them," said Scott.

The foundation for the splash pad is being prepared and pretty soon more features will be added.

"The splash pad is going to actually have about twenty-five different features on it. We're going to have a whale, we'll have a pelican hence our state bird and we're going to have some frogs little fountains," said Lisa Taylor.

The project will be completed in late spring, in time for this summer. It cost almost $400,000 but Rashaad says it will be well worth it.

"I think it will bring a lot of people in. I know there has been a lot of stuff going on with the animals coming in and out, so to have something that's here permanent will bring a lot of people here and will make Monroe itself a lot of money and it will make the zoo a lot of money too," said Scott.

You will pay general admission to use the splash pad but its one more attraction the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo will have to offer visitors like Rashaad. The zoo is going to sell seasonal passes for admission and they say the splash pad could help you save money on your air conditioning bill.
