UPDATE 3:35 P.M.

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Fire Chief has confirmed that the Olive Garden restaurant is a total loss.

Fire crews are still at the scene working the blaze.  Terry Williams said that two ladder crews are continuing to fight the fire.

Our crew at the scene says the part of the roof has caved in and fire officials are trying to prevent the entire roof from falling.

We'll have a live report at 5, 6, and 10 on Tuesday's KNOE 8 News.

UPDATE 1:40 P.M. The fire chief tells KNOE 8 News the first 911 call came in on the Olive Garden fire at 11:37 Tuesday morning.

Chief Terry Williams says the fire is electrical and that power had to be disconnected before crews to could fight the smoke and flames. The fire is in the roof of the restaurant, which has a double roof construction.

Wind is a factor in fighting the fire. The chief has ten different units on scene and he is getting ready to add a second ladder truck.

Chief Williams says the sprinkler system inside did activate and the cause is under investigation. No one was injured.

Chief Williams says the building is still mostly intact because of the two roof system. He says it appears there may have been two fires, one of which was put out by employees. Officials have not determined if the two fires are connected.

Previous Report:

UPDATE (1:30 P.M. Tuesday) MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Flames continue to pour out of the roof of the Olive Garden restaurant in Monroe.

The fire apparently started Tuesday morning outside, in the very back of the building. Witnesses tell KNOE  cardboard boxes were on fire. The burning boxes were first noticed by employees at a nearby business. Several workers got extinguishers and thought they had fire out, but about 20-minutes later more flames and smoke were spotted.

KNOE has a crew on the scene and is talking with fire officials and will post an update shortly. It appears the building is very heavily damaged.
